In 1985, the “Pilote” magazine featured the opening pages of a story inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien: “Le Cristal Majeur”—a heroic fantasy in which an elf called Altor is confronted by an evil fairy. The fairy has stolen a magic crystal which, among other things, provides protection against the forces of evil. As Altor soon discovers, there are many different worlds in the universe, and magic and science are often two sides of the same coin.
This new adventure comic, originally created by Jean Giraud (aka Moebius) and illustrated by Marc Bati (who worked together on Aedena’s “Sur l’étoile”), combines epic narrative with elaborate, fantastical artwork in order to present the story in a retro 1980s sci-fi style. Bati’s refined drawings harken back to the classic Moebius comics and as such are a fitting tribute to their famous creator. The first collection will comprise volumes 1–3 of the “Cristal Majeur” series, the second volumes 4–7.
