In 2006, Marc Tyler Nobleman started his quest to learn more about the
nearly forgotten co-creator of Batman. The man who created nearly the entire
mythology surrounding one of the most iconic superhero figures in history died
impoverished in 1974. Bill Finger is a graphic novel about Nobleman’s quest,
it’s a story about trauma and justice told on different narrative levels.
There is the story of Nobleman’s research, retracing comic book history in
search for the true story behind the Dark Knight. Then there is Bill’s story,
his encounter with Bob Kane and his work and struggles in the comic book
industry, dealing with depression while Kane, credited as the sole creator of
Batman, is in the spotlight. Then there is the story of Bill’s son who tries in vain
to re-establish his father’s legacy while struggling with his own sexuality and
later, HIV. And there is the story of Athena, Bill’s granddaughter who no-one
believes when she says that her grandfather is the co-creator of Batman.
