Once upon a time, there was a queen and two children…
Kay and Gerda are neighbors and best friends. On the day of the first snowfall, when they go outside together to play, Kay gets a snowflake lodged in his eye, leading to a dramatic change in behaviour. Subsequently, he is taken away by the mysterious White Queen, far from the village, and from Gerda.
Spring comes, but there is no news of Kay. When Gerda accidentally falls into the river and is swept away by the current, she comes across a boat where she discovers amazing things… magnificent gardens, frightening sorceresses, gigantic bandits. She also seems to have lost all sense of time — until the day she stumbles across Kay’s tracks. He is being held prisoner by the White Queen, in her palace of ice…
A bewitching fairy tale by Marie Pommepuy (alias Kerascoët), loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s story ‘The Snow Queen’, with a touch of the Brothers Grimm in its style. Enhanced by Pion’s stunning illustrations, rendered with a technique reminiscent of etching, evoking at times the work of the great Gustave Doré!
