Born into a family of Italian farmers at the beginning of the 19th century, Jean Bosco became known for his courage, cheerfulness and Catholic faith. When he became a priest, he launched numerous projects aiming to help poor families and youngsters involved in crime. Against the backdrop of the political upheaval that was rife in Italy at the time, Don Bosco soon gained international fame. He was canonized a few years after his death.
