Everyone knows about Charles Darwin’s work on the origin of the human species. But most people don’t know that, earlier in his career, he was very interested in quite a different species: the Griffus, a savage beast that roams the wilds of Canada. One person who does know this is Viscount Palmerston, the Prime Minister to Queen Victoria. Palmerston is a great admirer of the naturalist’s work. And now, he has need of Darwin to help explain the bloody attacks that have been plaguing the construction of a new railroad through Yorkshire.
