February 19, 1342. The Loredana, a galley flying the flag of the Venetian Republic, and which left Corfu two days ago, has just arrived at the place designated for a strange rendez‐vous, off the coast of Milos. Here, two young people are to be exchanged as a token of friendship between their nations: Marina Dandolo, daughter of the Doge of Venice, and the son of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. But neither will ever arrive at their destination…Marina and her young brother Zuanne find themselves held prisoners at Doulopolis, the city where pirates dump their hostages while waiting for a ransom.
