All ages
A coup on Terra 2 leaves the heir to the throne, a strong-willed 15-year-old girl, running for her life. After her ship crashes, she finds herself lost in the middle of a forest, along with the daughter of the palace cook and a somewhat awkward young peasant. On the run from rebel troops, the fugitives can count on no one but themselves… and on Bakou, a genetically modified orangutan who has been transformed into one of the most powerful weapons ever made. Laurent Verron and Cric, the new authors of Boule et Bill, throw themselves whole-heartedly into this thrilling adventure, which will completely revolutionize the all-ages bande dessinée.
The classic framework of this tale is really an excuse to create a marvelous, nuanced portrait of three adolescents — two girls and a boy — who, lost and alone, must now learn to live together. But ‘Fugitives” central character is really Bakou, the genetically-altered orangutan: simultaneously a protective nanny, a terrifying weapon, and a companion in misadventure.
A truly accomplished work.
