At the moment, the unflappable septuagenarian is charged with solving the disappearance of a young painter… David Demitt, a well-established artist who has run out of inspiration, has been making his student Mike Dichiara paint works which Demitt himself signs. But, tired of being exploited without reward, Mike threatens to reveal the fraud – and then vanishes without a trace. Panicked, Demitt sets Oxford on the trail…. But Oxford has barely started his investigations when a fire ravages the workshop of a painter. Among the ruins, a body is discovered, burnt beyond recognition. Could it be Dichiara? Despite the lack of evidence, Oxford believes that it could belong to the man whom he was charged to find. Then, just as the aged detective begins to include him in his suspicions, David Demitt dies under suspicious circumstances. Suicide? His widow doesn’t believe it, and, when she learns that the unidentified victim of the fire could be Mike Dichiara, she hires Oxford to pursue his investigation. It’s an investigation that begins to reach into Demitt’s past, as Oxford’s research leads him to Bastsheva Greenbaum, Demitt’s agent and former mistress…
