Kansas, 1861. Redford J. Randall, a veteran of the Indian Wars, has just established his transport company in Hill Haven, a small town near Topeka, and uses an old military fort up on a hill as its general headquarters. Since the roundup of five large Indian tribes in 1831 following the “Indian Removal Act,” a growing divide has developed between America’s East and West, with the West in the hands of Indian tribes, landowners, Mexican gangs, and even exiled Russians. With the arrival of the railroad, the area around Topeka will soon be in the spotlight. Randall intends to take advantage of this latent clash and his fortuitous geographical position to increase business by offering the safe transport of merchandise to both sides.
