In 1969, Pier Paolo Pasolini directs a movie called “Medea” with Maria Callas in the title role. It will be her only non-musical performance and a key moment in Italian movie history. Callas finds the movie shoot exhausting. She gets ill after a day of neverending retakes in the heavy conditions of mud and heat. The movie was not a huge commercial success, but it remains the only record of Callas in a non-singing role.
Meanwhile, another drama is unfolding—the complex love lives of the rich and famous worn out by their emotions on and off the screen: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Jackie Onassis and the Kennedys.
