Saint-Louis, Missouri. August 30, 1904. Third edition of the Olympic Games. While the one-legged George Eyser is winning medal after medal in gymnastics (six in all), the most improbable marathon in the history of the Olympic Games is going to take place. A poorly organized race with badly prepared participants. 32 marathoners at the start, 14 at the finish for the slowest marathon of all time, and one with quite a bit of cheating! An improbable race where the first recorded case of organized doping took place, where the first African athlete at the Olympic Games competed (escaped from the nearby World’s Fair), where a Cuban mailman competed in uniform, and where other people with incredible stories took part. A true and little-known story that will delight sports fans and others!
