February 1939. Éliane Goldschmidt, a young French linguist, lands in Paraguay to complete her studies of the Guarani language. With the Mbyas Indians, she discovers a people that are apathetic, resigned, as if they had decided to deliver themselves to death. But one morning, the village is all excited.
