March 1845. Henry David Thoreau has returned to his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. Grieving the recent death of his brother, weary of big cities and of a society too rigid to allow him to practice the art of teaching as he believes it should be done, the poet-philosopher has decided to return to a simpler way of life: close to nature and sheltered by the four walls that he has built for himself. Here he will write the essays that will make him one of the most notable figures in 19th-century American letters, whose ideas seem increasingly relevant every day. After Nietzsche, Maximilien Le Roy once more shows us the intimate connection between a man’s philosophy and his biography. A plunge into the life and thought of a major American philosopher!
