1938. Thomas Deschamps is returning to La Goffe, a small town thirty kilometers outside Liège. A wanderer and dilettante, Thomas is in every way the opposite of his older brother, Charles, who has become a noted and respectable member of the community.Ten years earlier, the brothers competed to win the heart of the beautiful Alice Régimont. In the end, she chose Charles’s solid seriousness over Thomas’ charm, spurring Thomas to depart for the Congo. The tension between the two men is still strong today – all the more because Charles has embraced the nationalist ideas that are flourishing throughout Europe in this period. Thomas’ convictions incline him toward the opposing side… but it takes the beginning of the German invasion to finally push him into action.
