May 1947. Two years after the war’s end. The village of La Goffre in the Belgian Ardennes region has regained its tranquility, and Hotel des Roches has once again reached out to its pre‐war clientele. Thomas, who had come back from the Congo nine years prior to take over as its general manager, spends less and less time running it and instead devotes himself to more lucrative activities, dealing in “made in the USA” products on the black market together with American military personnel.
