London, May 1941. Kate is a young Polish woman who has settled in England. (Her mother was the daughter of an English Lord.) Like many other young women with ambitions to fly, she has become a pilot and joined the volunteer Air Transport Army (ATA). She is taking life as it comes with her boyfriend Jim Berry, an Oxford graduate whose father is a Member of Parliament and a friend of Churchill, and the two of them, aware that life in wartime is fragile, have decided not to take anything too seriously. But when Russia, which invaded Poland at the start of the war, suddenly becomes Britain’s ally in the fight against the Axis forces, Kate finds the new alignment hard to stomach.
