Sigurd is the youngest son of a “Swedish” chieftain. His warrior talents contrast with his brothers’ penchant for far‐away trade or administration of the family estate. Very early, he joins the Order of Jomsvikings, a troop of ninth and tenth century mercenaries whose fort, Jomsborg, is located on an island in the southern part of the Baltic Sea, near the “Polish” coast.
