Sugar is the biography of a black cat who, for 18 years, was the author Serge Baeken’s pet companion. The author shows us what life looks like from a cat’s perspective: walking, playing, killing flies, defending territory, hunting mice, cuddling, hanging out with fellow creatures and so on. All this against the background of a rather calm family life. The author’s sole aim is to create. Although he has published fanzines since 1985, followed by his own comic magazine, his first comic book only came out in 2005. Over these twenty years, he developed his own – today easily recognizable – technique and style.Serge Baeken is a graphic mercenary who works for all the largest Belgian‐Flemish magazines, such as De Tijd, Trends, Knack, Focus and VPRO en Humo. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including Angouleme, Mekanik Strip (Antwerp), Stripwinkel Lambiek (Amsterdam), DeWarande (Turnhout) and at Mercator Gallery (Antwerp). It’s at Bries that he successfully publishes his first art work, The No Stories and ZZZ.In 2009, Serge Baeken became the official illustrator of the city of Turnhout (Belgium), a capacity in which he drew a panoramic strip ‘Het Verdriet Van Turnhout’ (The Sadness of Turnhout) with a script by his father, writer Robert Baeken.
