Pascal is a man of honour who works for the Milieu (organized crime group) in Marseille. In the 1980s, he enters into a contract with a Basque businessman who is the victim of an ETA extortion racket. As he refuses to pay up, he gets Pascal to agree that if anything should happen to him or his family he will kill Itzala, the mastermind behind the entire operation. When the story begins, Pascal is just getting out of prison, having copped to a murder in order to protect his boss in Marseille. He immediately finds out that the Basque businessman is dead, and he sets off to honour his contract. As he begins his quest for the mysterious Itzala, he is hopelessly plunged into a dangerous world eroded by fear and silence, where the corrupt secret service, police and other institutions make the situation worse and where only one thing is certain: in the end, the innocent victims are forgotten. This is based on a true story gathered by Felipe Cava himself and made into fiction for security reasons. It is a harsh look at a society worn down by terrorism and all that goes along with it – double games of the authorities, the conspiracy of silence, widespread fear, forced exile… THE best book about the Basque situation, bar none.
