When Military Police Master Sergeant Howard lands on Omaha Beach, he finds his son Jake already there—and soon discovers the extent of the corruption at the heart of the US Army. While Howard’s job is to keep his General safe, Jake takes advantage of his father’s position to negotiate the black market and further various other profitable schemes. But when the raped and mutilated bodies of local woman are found near the front, both men’s priorities suddenly change. Initially suspecting that it is the work of Frenchmen, investigators then link the atrocity to similar cases at other points along the front line. In desperation, and fearing that it will damage relations with the local people, the General asks Howard, who speaks French, to deal with it. Howard, in turn, asks for permission to use Hans, a German POW formerly responsible for policing the area, to help him, since he knows the locals well…
