A magnificent, lyrical fable about the transition from childhood to the world of adults. Jeanne is a little girl who lives with Pistouvi, a young fox, in a charming little cabin at the top of a giant tree that is surrounded by prairie. An enormous ‘tractor-man’ criss-crosses these infinite spaces, mowing ceaselessly. The wind, which appears in the form of a magnificent woman with long wavy hair, responds by planting the seeds she keeps in her pouch, thus foiling the mower’s aims. It is in this numinous world that Jeanne and Pistouvi learn more each day about identity and otherness, represented here by mockingbirds. Though at first they are inseparable, the two friends find their relationship fraying as Jeanne grows older, and little Pistouvi suffers from the effects. In this tale, evil is invisible but ever-present, and the passage into the world of adulthood must be accompanied by disillusionment…
