In 2016, Gaël Faye published his first novel, “Petit Pays” (Small Country), which won a number of prizes (including the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens and the Prix du roman Fnac). It tells the story of his happy childhood in a well-to-do expatriate enclave in Rwanda before the start of the civil war and Tutsi genocide that forced his family to seek refuge in France in 1995. Marzena Sowa and Sylvain Savoia, who created the moving “Marzi” series, have produced a vibrant adapatation of the story that highlights both its contemporary and its universal relevance.
