New things & top picks!
Dear partners,
With the Angoulême Festival behind us and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair ahead of us, we don’t want to take up too much of your time.
Among the many great titles released since the start of the year, we’d like to remind you of a few we’ve already mentioned, and draw your attention to some new books.
With Foudroyants, Inlandsis Inlandsis and Moi Je, Quarantaine we have marked the launch of Charivari, Dargaud’s new imprint! These are just the first titles in this edition, so keep an eye out for new ones in the near future!
What’s been simmering in Dargaud Benelux’s kitchen is a super-cool graphic novel Le rêve du Tchernobog and Moi, Cléopâtre, dernière reine d’Égypte, an intriguing story of one of the world’s most famous queens.
The Lombard team has decided to share some classified information with its readers, especially in a book Le Secret de Miss Greene. And believe us, although it looks small, La Crevette is hiding a big secret as well.
If you are up for a short trip, how about a holiday on Cuba? Havana Split will provide you with that, and it’s gonna be worth it, even with the bullets flying around. But in case that’s not your thing, then a nice stroll through a magical Oreka forest would be perfect for you.
And what can we say about Fan Man, Gaet’s & Julien Monier’s adaptation of William Kotzwinkle’s novel? Well, one thing is for sure, he is a fun man (pun intended, yikes).
Enjoy your readings.

What will happen when the Antarctic ice sheet, which is as old as the Earth, melts? And what will happen if two graphic novel writers living on it run out of food? Romuald and Marie are living the story they are writing, but, like the Antarctic, Marie is gradually losing her memory.
Following “Capital” and “Ideology,” Benjamin Adam returns to the theme of the future of our planet, which he explored in “Soon,” in order to tackle the questions he is most concerned with: How should we live together (and love each other) while the Earth is being ravaged by climate change? And how and why should we create anything when everything is about to disintegrate?

It is said that the spirit of Beirut is embodied in a genie that cannot be destroyed unless the city itself is destroyed… but this has yet to be proved.
In the 1970s, Beirut is a kaleidoscope of contrasting communities, their members living in relative harmony. But the advent of war threatens to disrupt this fragile balance.
“The Genie of Beirut” is a fictionalized three-volume account of the gradual destruction of the city, its sensitive portrayal of the catastrophe owing to the gentle and understated gravity of journalist Sélim Nassib’s text and the delicate luminosity of Léna Merhej’s illustrations.

I sit gazing out over the Bay of Alexandria, where once my palace stood. I am Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, the last Queen of Egypt. They say I am a femme fatale, licentious and venomous, who made amuse-bouches of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony; a heartless, merciless murderer. The Roman propaganda machine certainly did a good job. When I was a little girl, I had a gift for languages. I was fascinated by the catacombs that sprawled beneath the ancient city of Alexandria. Then I grew into a pretty, though not stunning, young woman. I had four children. I ruled a man’s world. I was the head of its most powerful empire. And my story became inextricably linked with famous historical events…
In this superb graphic novel, Isabelle Dethan challenges the myths that surround Cleopatra. Was she really a femme fatale and a matchless beauty? Did her nose really change the course of history? Did she really bathe in ass’s milk? Did she really soak her pearls in vinegar? With a combination of humor and academic rigor, Dethan tells the true story of Egypt’s last queen.

In the waning days of hunting and gathering, as settlements grow and flourish, humankind faces a stark choice: nomadism’s freedom and the hard life that goes with it, or sedentary society, with its refinements and hierarchies. These forking paths become more mutually exclusive, stirring enmity and conflict, but human squabbles prove petty in the face of natural disaster when it comes, towering and indifferent. In this Stone Age fable with curiously contemporary overtones, told with vibrant colors and a sweeping sense of story, Nicolas Puzenat touches on so many enduring mysteries, from religion to conscience to the anxiety of freedom.

It may not be easy for children to control their emotions, but it is essential. And it is the more so when you know those emotions generate devastatingly huge streams of electricity! Icarus, a young shepherd from Atlantis, makes this spectacular – but no less terrifying – discovery when Alec roughs him up for the umpteenth time. Lightning, sparks, you name it: Icarus can create electricity!
His grandmother tells him that people like him were once called “the chosen ones,” those who built the city of Atlantis. This was the energy that enabled them to erect magnificent buildings, pump water, heat their homes, and even travel to meet the other ocean communities. But this power attracted the covetousness of Neptune’s mysterious army. Rising up from the depths of the sea, his soldiers kidnapped them, and, in self-defense, they began to hide their energy, so well concealed that it eventually dried up.
Today, Atlanteans rely only on the strength of their arms. Icarus is stunned! He understands that he must hide his power at all costs, but the very next night, the army of shadows invades Atlantis and kidnaps young Lyssa. Icarus and Kalyo, Lyssa’s older sister, set off in search of her, discovering an underwater world whose mystery they may finally be able to unravel…
