Fantasy in the Reading Room
Ever since Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling became household names, the fantasy genre has been part and parcel of literature for children, and comics are no exception! Here are a few remarkable examples from our catalogues.
Some of the characters in our young readers’ comics explore a parallel universe, like pastry apprentice Chris in Monster Délices (Monster Delights) or Milo in Le Monde de Milo (Milo’s World). Others already inhabit a fanciful universe but lack magical powers, like Cosmo in Absolument normal (Absolutely Normal). Fresh takes on fairytales also abound in the comics medium, like in the award-winning L’Emouvantail (The Carecrow), where a scarecrow comes to life, befriending birds instead of scaring them away…
These recent releases bring magic into the life of our children like only good books know how to do.

Literary adaptation
A wealthy lawyer, at the head of a small firm in New York, decides to hire a new scribe. Bartleby, a hard-working young man, is appreciated by his employer–at first. But soon he adopts a disturbing attitude: the famous “I would prefer not to”. This is how he gently yet firmly responds to every request that is made of him. His complete and utter resistance, incomprehensible to others, will drive him little by little into total isolation.
Jose Luis Munuera takes command of Melville’s short story in a masterful adaptation and offers up a new perspective on the enigmatic character Bartleby and the world around him.
