It's been a busy month
For a month that starts with a joke, April did some serious work.
Although we are sure they had fun along the way, our authors worked hard to create some excellent books.
Kokopello went on a year-long journey to discover how the European Union works. Sounds like an impossible task, but with La Tour de Babel he actually managed to paint an accurate portrait of the EU, both instructive and funny!
Meanwhile, Bec & Carlos Puerta did a great job reviving an emblematic character of Bruce J. Hawker. Thanks to them, captain Hawker is ready to set sail for a new adventure.
And we have something very special for those who enjoyed the movie Back to Black. Find out more about Amy Winehouse’s incredible story with the newest docu-comic in Petit à Petit’s Pop Rock en BD collection.
Bonne lecture !

In 2016, Gaël Faye published his first novel, “Petit Pays” (Small Country), which won a number of prizes (including the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens and the Prix du roman Fnac). It tells the story of his happy childhood in a well-to-do expatriate enclave in Rwanda before the start of the civil war and Tutsi genocide that forced his family to seek refuge in France in 1995. Marzena Sowa and Sylvain Savoia, who created the moving “Marzi” series, have produced a vibrant adapatation of the story that highlights both its contemporary and its universal relevance.

Captain Sherman, the most eloquent and imaginative of pirates, knows how to motivate his troops when morale is low. And unfortunately, it usually is because the captain has a weakness: he rarely finds any treasures. However, he has been exploring a lead for some time now, one that quickly proves to be full of promise. One of his friends, an art dealer, has given him a rare text that will put him and his crew back on the right track. Pandora, a giant squid, is said to have swallowed a treasure carried by a Spanish ship from the New World. It’s no surprise that the idea of such a treasure arouses a great amount of superstitious excitement and desire. Despite the crew’s enthusiasm, many pitfalls await them in their search for riches. Sherman will also have to be wary of the underhanded trickery of an old rival: Rostand the Damned! This privateer, a former pirate, is in pursuit of Sherman’s ship, the Urraca. Captain Sherman likes to make his men travel, and not only towards the horizon: he tells them a thousand tales of adventures and sumptuous landscapes. But what is this whimsical man hiding in his quarters among the hundreds of books that surround him?

Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” was one of the best-selling albums in rock history. With her raspy voice, her wild hair, and her trademark wisp of eyeliner, she quickly became of the biggest pop icons of her century. And yet, in 2011, after bouts of depression, alcoholism, drug abuse, and bulimia, she joined the famously tragic “27 Club.”
This docu-comic—a combination of biography and graphic novel—retraces the key moments in Winehouse’s short life.

With over 21 million albums sold, Les Tuniques Bleues is one of the strongest representations of the Western in French-Belgian comics. It deals, among other things, with the absurdity of war and the value of friendship in the most extreme circumstances. Raoul Cauvin and Willy Lambil have remained discreet personalities, largely ignored in academic circles. This first coffee-table book dedicated to their work fills a real gap.
Over 200 original plates, carefully scanned and reproduced, bear witness to the triumph of Lambil’s drawing in the service of Cauvin’s exemplary storytelling!
