The Call of the Wild
Being in the wilderness challenges our limits and brings us out of everyday experience. It’s no wonder that nature exerts such a strong appeal on people of all ages and backgrounds. In the illustrated book Animal, young Simon answers a call of the wild and decides to leave his family for life in the forest.
Nature can disguise surprising secrets, like the library hidden in the belly of a whale in Zidrou’s latest tale The Library-Whale, but it can also lead to catastrophe and struggle. John Clark, the main character of Aimée de Jongh’s powerful graphic novel Days of Sand, is sent as a photoreporter to the Dust Bowl, an area of the middle United States plagued by devastating drought and sandstorms in the 1930s.
At the end of the day, we must all accept that nature can be both idyllic and disrupting, and learn to live in harmony with it. What will happen if we don’t? A few answers may be found in a non-fiction comic with a revealing title: Extinctions.

It is the early 1920s. The Volstead Act has recently prohibited the sale and consumption of alcohol, which means that an active black market has sprung up—a market controlled by legendary gangsters such as Al Capone. Supplies must be secretly shipped from France to its outpost in Saint-Pierre, Newfoundland. This dangerous and illegal trade involves aviators flying primitive sea planes—aviators such as Bessie the “Black Angel,” whose mixed heritage also makes her the target of the flourishing Ku Klux Klan. Based on the historical figure of Bessie Coleman, she flies in the face of injustice, prejudice, and discrimination.

Since early childhood, Paloma has lived in foster homes–a lot of them. Liselotte has given the troubled teenager one last chance but with it comes an ultimatum: Paloma has one year to make some true friends, or she’ll be sent to live in a group home. At high school, four other girls have also got their share of problems and pain, feeling isolated and sometimes even harassed or ostracized. They create the “Hopeless Girls’ Club” and will do anything to convince Paloma to be their friend. They want to help her overcome her terrible past.
Each volume in this series addresses a different issue, drawn from the life of one of the five teenagers. They all have one thing in common: like it or not, they don’t fit in to the micro-society of high school. But is that really why the club exists, or is one of them actually pulling the strings on these new friendships?
