In this tale, spread across two volumes (Avant minuit [Before Midnight] and Après minuit [After Midnight]), two plots intertwine over the course of a single night in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris. Freddy is an enforcer working for Zadjek, a gangster who runs multiple drug and extortion rackets in the district. Freddy’s determined to seize the woman he loves, a prostitute, from the claws of Zadjek himself. Meanwhile, the same day, a Chinese man with a perpetual smile has arrived in France to locate a young girl who’s fallen victim to smugglers, a girl who, as an illegal immigrant, risks finding herself in the most dangerous of situations. A double car-chase takes us through the streets of Paris’s most international neighborhood, plunging the reader deep into the unexplored darkness of 21st century Paris.
A realistic, novelistic thriller set in modern day France. A dark, tense, pulsating story, a tale of gangsters and criminals, but also of friendship.
