The year is 1812, and Napoleon’s armies are preparing to move into Moscow. Local governor Rostopchin orders the destruction of all the city’s fire hydrants, and frees all common‐law prisoners, on one condition: they will be pardoned for their crimes if they set fire to the city. At the heart of the inferno that Moscow has become, one man is indifferent to alldanger: Vasili will do whatever it takes to surmount the insurmountable and reunite his family.
