At her granddaughter’s request, Dounia begins telling her the story of her life, from 1940 to the end of the Second World War.
Dounia’s story begins even before the yellow star first appeared. As she explains her past, we see the mounting humiliation, the mistrust, the constant fear, and, finally, that terrible night when her father barely had time to hide her in the hollow floor of a wardrobe before the militia came. From then on, the little girl was constantly on the run.
In simple words, the grandmother tries to explain a period of history that is also, in some ways, the child’s own history…
