In celebration of Gaston Lagaffe’s 60th anniversary, the George Pompidou center is holding an exhibition in his honor from December 7th 2016 to April 10th 2017. This book gives us a backstage peek of Franquin’s work, and also highlights his pertinent perspective of a society that’s constantly evolving. In 1957, no one understood more than he to what extent young people were aspiring to create a new set of values, a social movement that reached its climax in France through the events of May 1968. Gaston may have been unemployed, but he was a hero of his time.
This 200-page exhibition catalogue is jam-packed with quality illustrations, archive documents, photographs and original artwork, complemented with numerous interview extracts and comments from Franquin himself.
