Ryu is on the verge of serious depression. The stress of life
in Tokyo, too much pressure at work, a romantic disappointment, and the
responsibility for watching over his sister Shu, who he’s cared for
since their parents’ death… a week’s vacation would definitely do him
good. Ryu makes up his mind to escape it all and go on a beach getaway. A travel
agency finds him the ideal spot: a tiny, untouristic volcanic island,
which is said to be forbidden to men…
It will be the first time that Ryu and Shu have been apart. The young
girl is afraid of being left alone. But, after all, a week isn’t long,
and her brother will be much happier when he comes back… From the
moment he reaches the island, Ryu is struck by the strange savagery of
the landscape. Wandering off the marked paths, he meets an old woman
who warns him to be careful, showing him a sign that marks the entrance
to a secret garden accessible only to women. Scorning what he thinks to
be no more than an old superstition, Ryu presses on and ends up in a
strange place, ringed by carved monoliths arranged in rigorous order and
filled with superb statues of the female form. What looks like
the entrance to a huge temple rises up before him. Beyond, he finds a vast sanctuary, where
stone women are assembled before a central pedestal. On the pedestal,
two statues depict a pair of beautiful twins, kneeling and apparently
bound together. Fascinated by their beauty, Ryu can’t resist the
temptation to touch. Suddenly, the stone becomes flesh, and the statues
begin to dance…
