In December 1946, Maurice de Bevere, otherwise known as Morris, published Arizona 1880, the first Lucky Luke adventure, in L’Almanach Spirou. It was such a success that the creator was soon overshadowed by his own creation. It was, without doubt, a question of modesty. And yet… Morris is a pure genius of the 9th art (an expression which, by the way, he himself coined and popularized). He invented the narration of action; he has a unique sense of setting (use of half-panels and bird’s-eye view); his aesthetic is nothing short of genius (sense of color, light-dark, outlining and symmetry) and then there are the archetypes he created that are to this day inscribed upon our memory (the sheriff, the undertaker, the town…). It was high time to dedicate an exhibition to him at Angoulême, and a picture book, in order to retrace his life and his fundamental contributions to the 9th art.
