USA, 1970. Joe is a harmless-looking old man, riding in his camper through
the great desert landscapes of the American West… well, not so harmless this
Joe, in fact. He is a former mafioso, and not the choirboy his looks could lead
you to believe… Joe is the first police informant in history, a guinea pig of the
Witness Protection Program, also called WITSEC, then still in its experimental
stage. He has to testify against his former accomplices, who are trying to have
him eliminated before he can testify at their trial. This makes him a bit on edge
and suspicious of everyone he crosses.
Carl, the U.S. marshal in charge of his protection, is not too thrilled to have
been put on this assignment. Baby-sitting a mobster was not what he had in
mind when he joined the police force… For him, a guy like Joe belongs behind
bars, or six feet under, not in the wilderness at the taxpayers’ expense. Will
WITSEC, designed to put a stop to organized crime, prove to be successful
and survive the test of this first experimental “client,” who’s unpredictable to
say the least? What if this “client” is worse than the mobsters he’s going to
help put away?
