January 1940. Brussels is hit by a particularly harsh winter. While everyone is waiting for war to break out, Fantasio enlists in the Belgian army. Meanwhile, Spirou is still a bellboy and carrying on with his life as normally as he can. When he meets Felix, a German‐Jewish painter whose work the Nazis deemed “degenerate,” and his wife Felka, Spirou’s eyes are opened to the “Jewish issue” and the situation in Europe and beyond. This impressive work of 330 pages across 4 books combines action, humor, historical fact, and philosophical reflection.
