In Edo-era Japan, Mohitsu, a calligrapher who wanders from village to village, meets Atsuko, a mischievous young girl in whom he discovers a gift for painting. He decides to take her with him to Edo for her to undergo her apprenticeship. As their journey goes on, a deep friendship develops between the calligrapher and the young painter. Woven into a long conversation on calligraphy, this relationship grants Mohitsu the strength to face the trials of his past and regain his inspiration. Structured like a road movie in medieval Japan, this story showcases a subtle blending of Japanese calligraphy and Maël’s hand. Superbly sophisticated.
