The whole world knows Mary Shelley, thanks to her famous novel Frankenstein. But who recalls her youthful indiscretions? As for instance her life with the dissolute poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who gave her his name, and who remains, for the English, much more famous than Mary? Or the amazingly intense passions of their friend Lord Byron, the greatest poet that England has ever known? These three may have elevated English Romantic literature to dizzying heights at the beginning of the nineteenth century. But we shouldn’t forget that their lives were even more remarkable than their writings.
