This series is set in the Mediterranean, in the middle of the First World War. The smuggling trade, always active in this part of the world, is busier and more dangerous than ever. Liro Tana is the captain of a freighter that carries secret deliveries and “sensitive” cargoes. Tana and his ship are double dealing: supposedly planning to receive an arms shipment for delivery to Turkey — which has entered the war on the German side — they are, in fact, under the orders of an English captain. After a brief battle, the cargo is loaded, and the ship sets out for Gibraltar, where the British army awaits. But Liro Tana is actually playing both ends against the middle! Evading the watchful eyes of the British, he cuts and runs, getting rid of the English captain along the way. He heads for the Atlantic, toward Mexico and his true final destination: a revolutionary party who he’s planning to sell his weapons to… But before making the great crossing, he must make a stop in France, to disguise his ship and to find a neutral ocean liner in whose wake he can follow to avoid the prowling German U-boats…
This album covers all the treacheries, hardships and cruelty of life at sea and during wartime, plus the captain’s moving personal history. This is high adventure at sea, a cross between Tramp and Corto Maltese. It’s a series of three albums, the first set on the Mediterranean, the second on the Atlantic, and the third on the great rivers of Mexico en route to the heart of the jungle.
