The hero of this series, which appeared in the pages of “Tintin” magazine, is a red-headed, pipe-smoking aviator who rents out his services as a pilot-for-hire and high-flying advertiser. Impassive, deadpan, and humble, Martin takes part in countless adventures, told with a tone that varies from comic to dramatic. He never hesitates to help those around him, often at the risk of his own life, without ever asking for anything in return. His airplane, the Old Pelican, is falling to bits and constantly losing pieces in flight — which isn’t surprising when we learn that Martin bought the wreck for a trifle from its previous owner, and fixed it up himself. Fingers crossed that it holds up for his next flight!
