Assassinated in 1975, Judge Renaud was the first French magistrate to be killed since the occupation. Previously a key member of the resistance, he was extremely stubborn, a ladies-man, and a stickler for justice. He dealt with some highly controversial cases concerning the big bandits, and was known for his orthodox business methods. He was nicknamed ‘the sheriff’, from which derives the title of the film directed by Yves Boisset, inspired by the great judge’s story. The justice system has never fully understood this dark story involving politicians, businessmen and the famous Lyon Gang. Himself of Lyonnais origins, Olivier Berlion went to great lengths in his research in order to tell just one small segment of the life of this extraordinary judge. Through his work, he also manages to shed some light on some of the more shadowy areas of the justice system.
