In 2008, in the Fensch valley in Lorraine, the once booming steel industry of France begins its death rattle as one by one the factories start to shut down. Despite the attempts of the unions to prove that they could become lucrative once again, the Arcelor Mittal site in Florange, the last bastion of the Lorraine steel industry, was officially closed in 2011. The consequences of this industrial decline will be far-reaching, both economically and on a human level.
The union meetings, the strikes, the protests, the politicians’ visits to Florange… the story sounds like a classic tragedy, where the heroes keep fighting even when they know that the battle has already been lost. But the fight is not over, even if there is little hope left after all the political betrayals they have endured.
